The PlayStation 4, which was launched in 2013, is still going strong with 59 million units sold as per Sony’s latest earnings call. Despite the release of newer consoles, the PS4 has retained a loyal user base, with 118 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network.
Sony’s chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki remains optimistic about the future of the PS4 and PS5, stating that console generation overlap will be handled well and monthly active users will continue to increase.
One key reason why gamers might be sticking with the PS4 is the price and lack of major game releases for the PS5. With no significant incentives to upgrade, many users are opting to hold on to their current console.
When can we expect the PS6?
While the PS5 is still in its life cycle, the release of the PS6 is not on the immediate horizon. Speculations suggest that the earliest we might see a PS6 is towards the end of 2027 or 2028, considering the timeline for Microsoft’s new console plans.
