XDefiant, Ubisoft’s free-to-play arena shooter, was launched on Tuesday for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. However, it immediately encountered matchmaking issues, as confirmed by a producer from Ubisoft through X.
Mark Rubin, the executive producer, mentioned that the “Matchmaking servers go boom!” and assured that the development team was working on resolving the problem. The official X account for the game also acknowledged the matchmaking difficulties, with players reporting empty lobbies and issues finding matches.

By 5 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, the XDefiant account had not confirmed a fix, but hinted at some progress. In the meantime, an XDefiant news site started giving out battle passes to followers while awaiting a resolution.
Matchmaking issues are particularly damaging for a multiplayer-only game like XDefiant that relies on smooth matchmaking to attract and retain players.
What is XDefiant?
XDefiant is a 6v6 shooter featuring characters from various Ubisoft franchises. Initially scheduled for release in October 2023, it faced delays until finally launching in May 2024. The game references franchises like Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and Far Cry 6.
Ubisoft’s decision to shut down The Division: Heartland in favor of focusing on XDefiant reflects their commitment to the game, with plans for Tom Clancy’s The Division 3 still in progress.
