Call of Duty deleted post-credit scene implies darker ending to a classic trilogy

A Call of Duty modder has reportedly discovered a post-credits scene for the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 that alters the game’s storyline based on their interpretation.

This unexpected find adds a new twist to a trilogy that reshaped the series and set a new benchmark for military first-person shooters. In the game’s single-player campaign, players defeat the main villain, terrorist Vladimir Makarov, with one of the protagonists, Capt. John Price, dropping a cigar as Makarov hangs from a noose. Price ultimately dies from his injuries.

The discovered post-credits scene features an “ominous stranger” watching Price and Makarov as they die, suggesting a deeper metaphorical ending where the “shadowman” symbolizes Death coming for Price as Price took Makarov.

Infinity Ward likely chose not to include this ending in order to keep the possibility of Price returning in future games or to keep the storyline open-ended.

The Modern Warfare series was rebooted with 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, continuing the story from Modern Warfare 3.

When can we expect the next Call of Duty game?

The release date for the next Call of Duty game has not been confirmed, but it is speculated that Treyarch, known for the “Black Ops” series, is working on a game set in the early 1990s during the United States’ campaign in the Persian Gulf region.

This game would tie into Treyarch’s established “Black Ops” timeline, which began with 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War and continued with 2010’s original Call of Duty: Black Ops.
