Reports have surfaced that artificial intelligence startup Humane Inc is looking for a buyer for its business, following the disappointing reception of its first wearable AI device upon launch.
According to Bloomberg, the company is seeking a sale price of between $750 million and $1 billion, but the sale process is still in the early stages.
Humane is currently working with a financial advisor to explore potential buyers for their company, which was established in 2018.
The tech company specializes in consumer electronics utilizing artificial intelligence technology, with both founders having previous experience at Apple before starting their own venture. In November 2023, Humane Inc secured $230 million in funding from investors such as Open AI CEO Sam Altman, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Microsoft, LG, Qualcomm, Volvo, and Tiger Global.
The company’s sole product, the AI Pin, was unveiled during a TED Talk in May of the same year. This device functions like a phone without a screen, allowing users to make calls, send messages, and execute commands through voice control and a cellular connection.
The AI Pin garnered attention and was even featured in Time’s Best 200 Inventions of 2023 list. However, reviews following the product’s release have been less favorable.
Humane AI Pin reviews receive criticism
With a price tag of $699, the AI Pin began shipping to customers in April 2024, but it has failed to meet expectations.
The device was designed to usher in a post-smartphone era, emphasizing engagement in the real world without constant screen distractions. However, reviewers have found the device lacking in performance.
The Verge’s review advised against purchasing the AI Pin, citing numerous flaws and unfinished features. Other critics described the device as unreadable in sunlight and labeled it a mere “party trick.”
Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee went as far as calling the AI Pin the “worst product” he has ever reviewed.
