Hi! I’m Rylie, the co-founder of House of Preservation, a skincare, beauty and wellness brand with medical spa locations in Austin and Dallas. My journey started 7 years ago with my childhood best friend, Brittany, when we decided to take a leap of faith out of the corporate world to pursue our shared love of skincare and anti-aging. We didn’t know exactly where to start, but took the first step by enrolling in esthetician school where we launched our blog and Instagram as a platform to educate and share our tips and tricks of what we learned along the way.
It was always our goal to be full-disclosure about what works and what doesn’t. We wanted to give the ‘real girls’” opinion and talk to our followers like we would our best friend, only vouching for what we would invest in and do. We love this industry because it’s constantly evolving. There’s nothing that turns us on more than discussing a new treatment, product or ingredient. However, it can feel overwhelming trying to keep up with the latest and greatest and knowing what’s worth the investment, so I’ve put together a roundup of my top 10 skincare tips to help you achieve and maintain your best skin ever.
Skincare Tips From House of Preservation Founder, Rylie Bland
Oil cleansing:
While in school to become estheticians, we discovered the Korean method of double-cleansing and it completely transformed our skin. It involves using an oil cleanser prior to your regular cleanser and here’s the reason behind it—oil cleansing not only breaks down dirt and makeup, but also pulls out whatever impurities are trapped in your pores. It literally melts away all traces of makeup in seconds, allowing your regular cleanser to do its job much more effectively. By starting with this step, you create a clean canvas so that your skin can reap the maximum benefits out of your routine. House of Preservations Step One cleansing oil is one of Lauryn’s favorite ways to cleanse.
Exosomes:
There is no bigger buzzword in skincare than exosomes right now. It’s the latest holy grail ingredient. Think of exosomes as tiny messenger molecules that tell your skin cells to regenerate, boost collagen production, decrease inflammation and hyperpigmentation, and promote healing—just to name a few. It’s being recognized as the future of skincare due to its ability to rejuvenate and repair the skin at a cellular level. Just looking at the before and after’s alone will make you a believer. It literally does it all. You can find HOP’s Plated Intense Skin Serum here.
Biostimulator injections:
Aka Sculptra and Radiesse. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, which simply inject volume, biostimulators work by triggering your body’s natural production of collagen to create its own volume over time. While it’s not instant gratification, the results are more natural looking and last much longer as the injections stimulate your own new tissue growth. We swore this is what kept our faces intact while pregnant and not able to get treatments done. We like to say it’s like planting seeds of collagen into the skin.
*Pro tip: massage is required after getting these injections and there’s nothing that does the job better than The Skinny Confidential’s face massager. Trust.
Small molecule hyaluronic acid:
While you might know hyaluronic acid is the superstar ingredient when it comes to hydrating the skin, not all hyaluronic acids are created equal. Only small molecule hyaluronic acid is capable of penetrating into the skin. Cheaper products that contain larger molecule HA can only sit on the surface, providing temporary hydration. The key to having long-lasting hydrated, plump skin is determined by which HA you choose. We’ve done the homework for you, and this one is the gold standard.
Antioxidants after-dark:
Most people assume applying antioxidants at night is counter-intuitive since its primary job is to protect the skin from environmental aggressors such as pollution, smoke and the sun. However, antioxidants never get fully absorbed into your cells during the day because they’re destroyed protecting the skin from free radical damage. Think of them as soldiers heading out to war, dying in the name of anti-aging. At night, your skin stops fighting and goes into overcharge to repair the damage of the day. This is when antioxidants are really able to shine and fight visible signs of aging. We like this Alto Defense & Repair serum.
Hydrating mists:
Hydrating mists have evolved from simple water sprays to advanced formulations that include anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial ingredients that work to calm and heal the skin. They also balance the skin’s pH to maximize the effectiveness of serums. We’re obsessed with keeping a mist in our handbag to refresh, calm and hydrate our skin throughout the day, especially in dry or air conditioned environments. We love Hydrinity Active Mist.
Broadband Light Therapy:
If I had to pick one treatment for life this would be it. In a nutshell, BBL treats discoloration of the skin from hyperpigmentation like sun and age spots, to vascular lesions like broken capillaries and rosacea, to targeting the bacteria found in acne. Consider it the Rolls Royce of photofacials as it’s a more advanced technology than the traditional IPL. The goal of the treatment is to create an even complexion- who doesn’t want that? There’s also no downtime! Win-win.
Chemical Exfoliation:
Can’t live without it. If you aren’t exfoliating, dead skin cells start to accumulate on the surface, which results in a dull, lifeless complexion. Never use anything abrasive such as beads and scrubs as they can be very damaging and cause micro-tears to the skin. Instead, opt for chemical exfoliants that use alpha and beta hydroxy acids to slough away dead skin cells by dissolving the bonds that hold them together. It’s instant gratification for radiant, glowing skin. You probably already know about DDG Peel Pads.
LED Mask:
One of my absolute favorite at-home devices is my LED light mask. While the serial killer looking masks are all over Tiktok and IG reels, there are plenty of studies to back up the benefits of using one. It works by emitting different colors of light energy to fast track the skin’s natural healing process, stimulate collagen and fight acne-causing bacteria. Why not kill two birds with one stone by wearing your mask while you do literally anything around the house? It’s a no-brainer. The one I have (and Lauryn’s fave) is Dr. Gross’s Spectralite mask.
Neurotoxins:
I would be remiss not to mention the #1 way to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. This is our go-to anti-aging treatment. When you get botox/dysport early on, you’re preventing the fine lines and wrinkles you already have from deepening. Normal facial expressions will form wrinkles over time, so by relaxing the muscles associated with those movements, you not only soften and smooth the appearance of any existing lines, but also prevent new ones from forming.
